Border Collie dogs are probably the best sheepdog around and provide a valuable service to farmers all over. The reason may be that these dogs start their training as soon as they can run, in as early as four weeks old!
Primarily developed for herding livestock, Border Collies are considered among the worlds smartest dog breeds. These dogs possess a thick coat and have a very active and intelligent personality.
Although rarely used as an actual shepherd dog anymore, Border Collies are now kept more like household pets like any other average dog. In some rural countries and parts of the world, Border Collies are still used to herd farm animals, as suited to their breeding.
These active and intelligent dogs start their training while they are still pups.
Intelligence needs stimulation. Border Collies need a lot of activities to keep up with its energy levels and can be a great companion for the outdoorsman or sports enthusiast as this dog breed can keep up.
These dogs show strong personalities, and as the owner, you will need to show them who the alpha male is early on by establishing firm leadership. Border Collies are so uniquely suited to owners with active lifestyles that sometimes it would seem like they were bred for them!
Positive reinforcement is always the best. Perhaps not only applicable to Border Collies, but positive reinforcement when training any dog also works best for both owner and pet. Doing this means that correct behavior is always rewarded with treats or endearments, encouraging your dog to do the “right” thing consistently.
It is also encouraged to let the dog socialize more often to reel in their strong herding instincts, especially if only being kept as household pets.
